Tin is trading near an all-time record. The London Metal Exchange (LME) three-month tin contract hit $59,040 per metric ton in January 2026, its highest level ever, and currently trades around $55,225/t. The previous record, set in March 2022 during the post-Ukraine metals rally, was $51,000/t. Demand from electronics, semiconductors, and AI data centers has collided with years of supply disruption to push the metal to historic highs. For investors exploring exposure to this market, here is a guide to tin stocks, organized by region, along with the key factors shaping the investment case.

#What Is Tin and Why Does It Matter to Investors?

Tin is an industrial base metal, not a precious metal. It does not share the store-of-value characteristics of gold or silver, and its primary driver is industrial demand rather than financial sentiment -- though speculative fund flows have become an increasingly significant influence in recent years.

Its core use is as a soldering agent in electronics. No tin, no circuit boards. That dependency links tin demand directly to semiconductor production, consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, and, more recently, AI data centers, all of which require solder to connect components. Tin is also used in tin plating, alloys such as bronze and pewter, and specialty chemicals.

Tin's value stems from a combination of essential industrial uses and a structurally tight supply chain. Production is concentrated in a small number of countries with significant operational and political risk, which means disruptions translate quickly into price volatility.

This article is part of our series on metals and mining. You may also like our guide to investing in battery metals.

Due to the cyclical nature of commodities, tin tends to go up in value when the global economy is strong. But it's volatile, so not necessarily a popular choice for cautious investors.

#What Is Driving the Tin Price in 2026?

The International Tin Association (ITA) projects global tin demand will rise by 40% by 2030, driven by electronics, EVs, solar energy, and data center construction. That long-run demand outlook has attracted institutional and speculative fund capital to the market.

On the supply side, two chronic disruptions have defined the market since 2023. Myanmar's Man Maw mine, the country's primary tin operation, has been running at restricted capacity following a resource audit closure in 2023, with recovery slow and uncertain. In Indonesia, the world's largest tin exporter, President Subianto ordered the closure of around 1,000 illegal mining operations in Sumatra, and authorities seized 500 tonnes of illegally mined tin in early 2026. Together, Myanmar and Indonesia account for approximately 40% of global tin exports.

The ITA noted in January 2026, when tin first hit its nominal all-time record, that increased investor activity -- particularly in China -- had amplified the price beyond what supply fundamentals alone justified. Shanghai Futures Exchange tin trading volumes exceeded one million tonnes in a single session in early January 2026, more than double annual global physical usage, prompting Chinese authorities to warn against speculative excess.

As of late May 2026, ITA market analyst Huanbo Qin told LME Asia Week that global refined tin production is forecast to grow 2.7% in 2026, while consumption is expected to fall by 0.7%, reflecting high prices curbing spot buying and a slowdown in Chinese solar installations. LME exchange stocks have risen 60% year-to-date to 8,660 tonnes, and time-spreads are in contango, indicating adequate near-term supply. Whether prices can hold near record levels as the market moves toward balance remains an open question, according to Reuters.

LME tin is up 36% year-to-date as of late May 2026, making it the best-performing base metal on the exchange so far this year.

#Is Tin a Good Investment?

Investing in tin depends on various factors such as market demand, supply, geopolitical issues, and economic conditions. Tin plays a crucial role in various industrial applications, especially in the production of electronics and soldering materials. Therefore, growth in these sectors may drive up the demand for tin. However, investing in tin, like any commodity, carries inherent risks and should align with an investor's risk tolerance, goals, and investment strategy.

Due to the cyclical nature of commodities, tin tends to go up in value when the global economy is strong. But it is volatile, and the LME tin contract is the smallest and least liquid of the exchange's base metal markets, which means price swings can be sharper than in copper or aluminum.

#Why is Tin Valuable?

Beyond its use in solder, tin forms essential alloys like bronze and is vital in the electronics industry for making connections on circuit boards. Its anti-corrosive properties also make it valuable in coating other metals. Furthermore, tin's limited supply and increased demand in green technologies have been contributing to its value.

Everyday items made out of tin include tin cans, solder, pewter items, window glass, anti-corrosive coatings and even toothpaste.

#Is Tin a Precious Metal?

Tin is considered a valuable industrial metal rather than a precious metal. Precious metals typically have a high economic value, are rare, and are often used for investments and jewelry. Tin's abundance and primary industrial application differentiate it from traditional precious metals.

#Tin Stocks by Country

#Canada

#Alphamin Resources Corp. (TSX.V: AFM)

Alphamin is the clearest pure-play tin producer available to Western investors. Its Bisie Tin Mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the largest primary tin operations in the world, accounting for 6.3% of global tin mine supply as of 2025, according to Project Blue estimates.

Alphamin Resources, traded on the Canadian Venture Exchange as AFM, is a pioneering tin exploration and mining company. This tin miner is based in Mauritius and its flagship project is in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Alphamin's core business centers around the production and sale of high-grade tin concentrate from the Bisie Tin Mine in the DRC.

The company posted record output in 2025 of 18,576 tonnes, a 7% year-over-year increase that exceeded revised guidance despite a temporary suspension of operations in March 2025 following the advance of M23 rebel groups in eastern DRC. Operations resumed and the mine finished the year above target. Alphamin has set 2026 production guidance at approximately 20,000 tonnes of contained tin. A new CEO and CFO both took up their roles in March 2026, and an active exploration drilling campaign is underway at Mpama North and Mpama South to extend mine life.

The DRC jurisdiction remains the primary risk. Security conditions in eastern Congo are volatile, and the temporary 2025 shutdown illustrates the operational exposure.

It began commercial production on September 1, 2019, and has an 84% stake in the Bisie tin underground project at the Mpama North Mine, which is believed to yield the world's highest-grade tin at roughly 4.5%. That comes in at almost four times higher than most global tin mines. The DRC government and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa hold minority stakes.

Alphamin is listed on the TSX Venture Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE: APH). UAE-based International Resources Holding acquired a 56% controlling stake in Alphamin from Tremont Master Holdings in July 2025 for approximately $367 million.

From a financial perspective, Alphamin's capital allocation strategy includes growth investment, exploration, and dividends.

#TinOne Resources Inc. Following its re-domiciliation from Canada to England and Wales in December 2025, the company delisted from the TSX-V and now trades solely on AIM under the ticker TIN.

Its flagship project in Cornwall, UK, is the South Crofty tin project. Cornish Metals bought the South Crofty tin project and extra mineral rights in Cornwall in July 2016. These extra rights cover around 15,000 hectares and include old mines that were previously mined for copper, tin, zinc, and tungsten.

The former South Crofty tin mine, which operated for over 400 years, closed in 1998. Since acquisition, the company has completed and published an updated preliminary economic assessment (PEA), secured all necessary environmental permits, and completed construction of a water treatment plant. Underground and surface construction works are now actively advancing.

The company has optimized its development sequence, bringing forward pre-production development of the 290-level to Q3 2026, and first tin production guidance is unchanged at mid-2028. The updated PEA places the after-tax net present value at £180 million at a 6% discount rate, with an all-in sustaining cost in the lowest global quartile.

Financing has advanced significantly in 2026. In May 2026, the company completed a $210 million Nordic bond issue, which was oversubscribed and attracted institutional investors from North America, the UK, and Europe. This was followed by a £52 million secured credit facility from the National Wealth Fund and Vision Blue Resources to support underground mine development, shaft refurbishment, and surface infrastructure. However, there are several risks to investing in this commodity.

Concentration risk. Global tin production is heavily concentrated in Indonesia, China, Myanmar, and the DRC -- jurisdictions with elevated political, regulatory, and operational risk. Supply disruptions in any one of these countries can move the price sharply, as the 2023-2026 cycle has demonstrated.

Conflict mineral classification. Tin is classified as a conflict mineral due to illegal mining activity in parts of the DRC and elsewhere. Companies sourcing from smelters are required to verify supply chain provenance through processes such as the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process. This adds compliance cost and limits participation from major diversified miners.

Speculative volatility. As the ITA noted in January 2026, speculative fund flows have become a primary price driver, disconnected at times from physical supply and demand fundamentals. LME tin's small market size amplifies this dynamic, and sharp reversals are possible.

Project execution risk. For development-stage companies like Cornish Metals, the gap between a permitted project and first production is long, capital-intensive, and subject to cost overruns, permitting delays, and scheduling shifts.

Demand sensitivity. While structural demand growth from electronics and green energy is well-documented, cyclical downturns in semiconductor production or consumer electronics can reduce near-term tin consumption. As of Q1 2026, high prices are already curbing spot buying from downstream manufacturers.

Jurisdiction risk. The DRC, Bolivia, and Indonesia each carry specific risks -- armed conflict, resource nationalism, and regulatory unpredictability -- that have directly affected production in recent years.

Mining is a notoriously risky area to invest in, but it can be highly lucrative when backing the right projects at the right point in the cycle.

#Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top tin stocks for investors to watch?

The most operationally established pure-play tin stock accessible to Western investors is Alphamin Resources (TSX-V: AFM), which produces 6.3% of global tin mine supply from the Bisie mine in the DRC. For development-stage exposure in a Tier 1 jurisdiction, Cornish Metals plc (AIM: TIN) is advancing the South Crofty project in Cornwall, UK, toward first production in mid-2028. Yunnan Tin (SHE: 000960) is the world's largest tin producer but is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, which limits access for many international investors.

Is tin a precious metal?

No. Tin is an industrial base metal. It does not carry the store-of-value characteristics of gold or silver, is relatively abundant, and its price is driven by industrial demand rather than investment flows alone -- though speculative interest has grown significantly since 2024.

What is the easiest way to get tin price exposure?

The most direct route for investors in the UK and Europe is the WisdomTree Tin ETC (LSE: TINM), which tracks the Bloomberg Tin Subindex via futures contracts and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. It eliminates company-specific risk but does not provide equity upside from mining operations.

Why is tin considered a critical mineral?

Tin is essential to electronics manufacturing. Every printed circuit board (PCB) requires tin-based solder to connect components. Growing applications in EVs, solar panels, AI data centers, and semiconductor packaging have elevated tin's strategic status. Western governments, including the UK and US, are actively seeking to reduce dependence on supply from politically sensitive jurisdictions.

#Check out related articles:

An Introduction to Metals and Mining Penny Stocks

Why Buy Gold Miners?
It’s one thing to know what an Alternative Investment is – but it’s another to know the best ones to target. Here are the top five alternative investments you should be considering.

The fact is, with interest rates at record lows, getting a decent return on cash in the bank is unlikely. This is encouraging savers to look elsewhere for alternative investments to boost their future wealth potential. Whether you’re a seasoned investor looking to diversify or are simply interested in dipping your toes in the water, alternative investments could be just what you’re looking for!

#Why choose alternative investments?

Investing in the stock market via a Stocks and Shares ISA, Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) or trading in a brokerage account is a great way to take control of your finances and build a substantial nest-egg for the future. But it’s not for everyone and many find the prospect daunting, time-consuming or simply boring.

For those that do invest in the financial markets, there comes a time when diversification is a wise move. That’s because we all know that keeping all your eggs in one basket is just asking for trouble.

So, whatever your reason, alternative investments could offer an interesting way to invest your cash.

#1. Gold and precious metals

Gold is an investment as old as the hills and it’s stood the test of time as a way to store value. While the rise of cryptocurrency has taken the shine off gold for some investors, many still see it as a long-term hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty.

We are living through unprecedented times with the astronomic rise of money printing and global economies reaching record levels of debt. This makes many older investors extremely nervous, making gold a very tempting asset to buy.

While gold is the most sought-after of precious metals, it’s not the only store of value. Silver is another popular investment because it’s widely used in electronics as well as being worn as jewellery. Then there are other metals which have recently risen in popularity as commodity prices rise. These include platinum and palladium.

Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium can be purchased in its physical form as coins or bars. They can be delivered to your home for safe keeping or can be stored in a vault, so you simply receive a certificate of ownership.

An alternative way to invest in precious metals is through exchange-traded funds (ETFs), gold mining stocks, bonds, futures, and options. For beginners to investing, owning the physical bullion is the safest and simplest option. It’s generally thought that a 5% to 10% allocation to gold is a wise way to hedge and balance your portfolio.

Depending on where you live there may or may not be tax implications to owning gold.

Generally, gold is a fantastic way to diversify your portfolio because it doesn’t tend to correlate with any other investment asset class. Therefore, when equities are tanking, the price of gold usually stays strong.

#2. Equity crowdfunding

While buying shares outright gives you an ownership stake in the business, this is only the case for publicly listed companies which are quite far down the road to being established. If you want to own a share in a company that’s just getting started a way to do this is through Equity Crowdfunding.

This gives start-up companies an opportunity to raise the money they need to grow, from retail investors. There are various equity crowdfunding websites set up to facilitate the transactions. For instance, AngelList, CircleUp, SeedInvest, Seedrs or Wefunder to name a few.

It works in the same way as buying equities in the financial markets – like buying shares in Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) or Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA). This means you have the chance to make money if the company does well or you could lose your money if it fails.

Possibly the most famous equity crowdfunding success story belongs to Brewdog, which has raised over £100m. But it’s not the only success story. Cruise Automation was sold to General Motors (NYSE: GM) and early investors saw gains of 1,011%. Not all equity crowdfunding stories end in profit though, so it does come with risk. It can also take years before you’ll see a return.

#3. Real estate

Buying property to own, flip, or rent out (short or long-term) is a very popular alternative investment. However, it does require large sums of money to get started or at least the means to get a mortgage in place. It can also involve a lot of work, responsibility and cost in the process of being a landlord.

A cheaper alternative to buying property outright is to invest in a real-estate investment trust (REIT) which is similar to an ETF or fund.

Real estate covers a mix of investments. Commercial real estate has suffered in the pandemic with a pivot to home-working leading to a decline in demand. But residential house prices have soared and it’s the subject of much debate as to whether this can feasibly continue.

A newer way to get into real estate investment is to buy private mortgages through a platform such as Paperstac (founded 2015). This connects mortgage owners with private investors rather than a bank. When buying mortgage notes you’re investing in property debt rather than real estate directly. You can expect to receive monthly payments that include both interest and principal on your investment. However, this is a risky investment, you need a large amount of capital to get started and there’s a chance you could lose it all.

Real estate can prove a good diversification for stock market investors as it often does well when equity markets sink.

#4. Cryptocurrency

Investing in digital currency has gone mainstream since the pandemic hit and sent economic stability into a tailspin. There are thousands of cryptocurrencies to choose from and the entire process can be daunting. The decentralized nature of many crypto assets mean they’ve got real potential to change the monetary system as we know it.

Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are by far the most popular and currently most stable cryptocurrencies to own. Others such as Cardano (ADA), Tether (USDT), Stellar (XLM), Polkadot (DOT) and Dogecoin (DOGE) all regularly make the headlines but are still in their infancy. And beyond that there are thousands of altcoins to choose from. Each of which promises weird and wonderful reasons to trust in the cause on the way to making a fortune.

Cryptocurrency is an extremely volatile asset, even Bitcoin and Ethereum experience wild price swings. It’s not for the faint of heart and getting started comes with a pretty steep learning curve. It’s also safer to store your crypto in a cold storage device such as a Ledger as the exchanges are at risk of being hacked.

#5. Collectibles

For centuries people have enjoyed collecting things and nowadays there are many items investors can collect as a way of preserving wealth for the future. From traditional artworks to high quality alcohol such as whisky, gin or vodka, to sports memorabilia, comic books, sneakers (think Air Jordans, Nike Dunks, and Yeezys), pop culture, Lego, and now Non-fungible tokens (NFTs). NFTs are a form of digital crypto art which has taken both the crypto and traditional art worlds by storm in 2021.

All-in-all there are a huge number of alternative investments in the collectible’s category. Collecting can be a very enjoyable pastime because you’ve got something to show for your money and it can be a real talking point. But the downside to collectibles is where to safely store them to avoid damage and theft. Even with NFTs they need to be safely stored in cold storage on a Ledger for instance.

These five alternative investments are simply to give you an idea of what’s popular today. But there are many more fantastic ways to invest your money.

The communications services sector is vast. It encompasses network service providers, web-based software companies, social media giants and more. This emphasis on tech is evident because some companies in the industry, such as Facebook, were formerly classified as information technology outfits.

Even before COVID-19 hit, the sector was designated as “critical infrastructure” by the US government. However, the pandemic period made it clear just how much the world relies on communication services companies. Millions of people spent months locked away in their homes, isolated from family and friends. This has made a good internet connection and web-based entertainment essential for many of us.

It can be a flashy and exciting sector to invest in. The sector is packed with innovative ideas from Silicon Valley and giant corporations with tens of millions of customers. Even so, there are risks associated with this sector. Perhaps chief among these is regulatory risk, which has been particularly relevant in recent years due to concern about companies’ handling of users’ personal data.

Some of the major players in the US communication services sector are:

AT&T

Verizon

T-Mobile

Facebook

Comcast

Netflix

Alphabet

#Q4 Communications momentum stocks

Momentum refers to the speed or rate of change in stock price.
The utilities sector is made up of companies that deal in electricity, gas, water and waste services. Commercial, industrial, governmental and residential customers need these services constantly, so demand does not tend to falter in times of economic recession.

However, the rates companies can charge are regulated, which keeps things affordable for customers which stops utilities companies from jacking up prices too much. Consequently, utilities can be stable investments which will provide reliable but unspectacular returns.

But there are also challenges. Oil and gas prices can change at the drop of a hat, making energy companies a tricky investment.
The Industrials sector is largely comprised of companies that provide logistics or manufacture tools and equipment. It is a relatively small company, but it shows signs of growth potential.

#Seneca Foods Corporation Class A (NASDAQ: SENEA)

Seneca Foods Corp. engages in the processing and sale of packaged fruits and vegetables. It operates through the following segments: Packaging and Sale of Fruits and Vegetables, Packaging and Sale of Prepared Food Products, Sale of Snack Products, and Other Products. The company was founded by Arthur S. Wolcott in 1949 and is headquartered in Marion, NY.

#What are the basic fundamentals of SENEA stock?

SENEA stock's market capitalization is approximately $470m. It has around $170m in debt, and free cash flow is approximately $39m.

Is 4 a good P/E ratio?

Seneca Foods Corp. has a forward price to earnings ratio (P/E) of 4.

The stock price divided by its earnings per share gives us the P/E ratio. This means if the P/E is high, investors are confident it will go on to earn a lot more money. If the P/E is low, there are doubts in investors' minds.

Traditionally a P/E below 10 was considered a bargain, value stock. But a P/E lower than 5 is particularly risky, indicating the company is in distress.

A P/E between 10 and 20 is generally considered fair for a quality company that many investors agree has good potential. When a P/E gets very high, it may indicate the stock is becoming overvalued and therefore expensive. But that's not always the case as it can also simply show extreme confidence in a stock that may well grow into its earnings ratio.

Is 0.88 a good P/B ratio?

Seneca Foods Corp. has a Price/Book value of 0.88x.

The price-to-book (P/B) ratio is a favorite financial metric among value investors.

Traditionally, a P/B value below 1 is considered good, indicating a stock that may be undervalued.

Is 0.32 a good P/S ratio?

Seneca Foods Corp. has a Price/Sales ratio of 0.32x.

The price-to-sales (P/S) ratio is a prized financial metric used by analysts and investors. A P/S ratio below one is considered excellent, while a P/S ratio between 1 and 2 is reasonable.

The P/S ratio measures how much an investor is willing to pay for the stock per dollar of the company's sales.

In his 1984 book Super Stocks, successful investor Ken Fisher claimed the P/S ratio is a very good indicator of a stock's popularity. Later, legendary investor James O'Shaughnessy confirmed this view. In his book What Works on Wall Street, O'Shaughnessy said the P/S ratio was the single best indicator of a stock's value and predictor of its future.

Is Seneca Foods Corp. generating sales?

Seneca Foods Corp. has a 3-year CAGR for Sales of 8%.

Sales growth for its latest interim period vs. the prior period is negative at -18%.

Is Seneca Foods Corp. increasing earnings?

Seneca Foods Corp. also has a 3-year EPS CAGR of 213%.

EPS growth for its latest interim period vs. the prior period is negative at -37%.

What is the target price for SENEA stock?

The SENEA share price has risen approximately 30% in the past year.

There are no analyst estimates for SENEA stock at the time of writing.

How many ETFs hold SENEA stock?

Seneca Foods Corporation Class A stock is held in 47 ETFs.

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are created by institutions such as investment banks and fund managers. They are a popular risk-reduced way of investing. If a stock is found in many ETFs, it shows increased confidence in the company.

Does Seneca Foods Corp. pay a dividend?

SENEA does not currently offer shareholders a dividend yield.

What is Seneca Foods Corp.'s current short interest?

At the time of writing, Seneca Foods Corp. had a 1% short interest in its stock.

Short interest as a percentage of float above 10% is considered high and above 20% is exceptionally high. This should warn investors of potential risks.

How do you know if a stock has high momentum?

Traders look at various chart indicators to help guide them to momentum-driven stock picks. Some of these include the rate of change, trading volume, and relative strength.

A rate of change (RoC) above zero can indicate upward momentum in the stock.

An increase in trading volume shows us interest in the equity is real.

The relative strength index (RSI) compares the size of recent gains to recent losses. When RSI moves higher, crossing from under 30 to above 30, it is generally considered a buy signal.

None of these should be used in isolation, but they can help predict stocks that are gaining momentum when considered together.

At the time of writing, SENEA stock is not showing significant signs of momentum. Its relative strength for one month is 5%, and one year is 10%.

Real estate stocks, often referred to as REITs (real estate investment trusts), are in the buildings business. These companies make their money by owning or funding buildings or construction projects before leasing or renting the premises.

Public REITs own approximately $2.5trn in assets, translating to more than 500,000 properties. These buildings are from various property sectors and include offices, shopping malls, data centers, and storage facilities.

Investing in real estate can help add diversity to a portfolio. REITs tend to hold their value well and can provide steady income through regular dividends.

Some major real estate stocks to be aware of are:

American Tower Corporation (AMT)

ProLogis Inc. (PLD)

Crown Castle International Corporation (CCI)

Simon Property Group (SPG)

Digital Realty (DLR)

Equinix (EQIX)

Public Storage (PSA)

#Q4 2021 Real Estate momentum stocks

Momentum refers to the speed or rate of change in stock price. Healthy price trends tend to exhibit strong momentum, and price weakens when momentum subsides. The following real estate stocks have been enjoying a rise in momentum in recent weeks.
Since Bitcoin emerged in 2009, interest in cryptocurrency has grown, and the variety on offer has exploded. There are now over 10,000 different crypto coins and tokens circulating, and every day, it seems there’s a new not-to-be-missed investment opportunity.

Sadly, most of these are nothing but pump and dump schemes used by scammers to dupe the uneducated. However, along with Bitcoin, some cryptos have gained respect and recognition.

So, what are the best cryptocurrencies to look out for in the second half of 2021?

It’s still unchartered territory, and when it comes to crypto investing, there are no guarantees, but the following seven top crypto picks are hot tickets in 2021.

Read on to discover what’s to like about these crypto favorites.

Check out our handy ‘What Is..?’ guide to cryptocurrency

#Bitcoin ($BTC)

Bitcoin is the mother of all cryptocurrencies. It was invented by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto and has garnered cult status and a place in the history books for eternity.

Bitcoin runs on a blockchain, which is a digital ledger advocating transparency and accountability. Transactions can take place anywhere in the world, creating a 24/7 network decentralized from the control of any single government or nation.

Whenever a BTC is bought or sold, the transaction is verified on the blockchain by solving a cryptographic puzzle. This process is known as proof of work and is designed to be a safe and secure way of transacting.

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Bitcoin Price: $46,155

Market cap: $868bn

24hr Volume: $31bn

Circulating supply: 18.7m

#Six-month performance:

It seems the world is divided into bitcoin bulls and bears. In fact, it has a group of staunch supporters that believe Bitcoin is the future of money.

#Bitcoin is the Future of Money. https://t.co/3jzdlgZcdm

— Michael Saylor⚡️ (@michael_saylor) August 13, 2021

Michael Saylor believes #Bitcoin is the Future of Money.

Over the past six months, Bitcoin has been on a roller-coaster ride and is down 2.7% in this time. During this period, it has seen a high of $64,863 on April 14 and a low of $28,893 in July. This illustrates its volatile nature and why crypto trading is a risky endeavor.

#Ethereum ($ETH)

Ethereum is a close competitor of Bitcoin despite being much newer. It was invented by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and went live in 2015.

Ethereum is a cross between a cryptocurrency and a blockchain platform on which other developers can run applications. These include smart contracts and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), aka digital art.

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Ethereum Price: $3,211

Market cap: $376bn

24hr Volume: $24bn

Circulating supply: 117m

#Six-month performance:

Just as some believe Bitcoin is the future of money, another group sees Ethereum as the superior crypto set to flip its status as the number one digital coin.

Indeed, it’s been fuelled by momentum in recent weeks and has been on an upward trajectory since July 20.

Like Bitcoin, the price of Ethereum has been extremely volatile over the past six months. It reached an all-time high of $4,362 in May and a low of $1,361 in February.

#Cardano ($ADA)

The Cardano platform was designed to be a highly scalable and interoperable blockchain. It has embraced proof-of-stake validation, which has the added benefits of decreasing energy usage and environmental impact thanks to eliminating competitive transaction processing – something that Bitcoin currently does through mining.

Like Ethereum, Cardano also enables smart contracts by using ADA as its native coin for all transactions on the network.

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Cardano Price: $1.97

Market cap: $63bn

24hr Volume: $6.1bn

Circulating supply: 32bn

#Six-month performance:

The Cardano price has fluctuated over the past six months but slightly less so than Bitcoin and Ethereum. It’s up 132% during this period and reached an all-time high of $2.46 in May.

The ADA token made a triumphant return to the $2 mark on Friday 13 August as weekly gains topped 50%. Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView showed ADA/USD quickly shooting higher on Friday after overcoming heavy resistance. At the time of writing, the pair circled $2.08 and was continuing to climb, gaining an impressive 25 cents overnight for its highest price since May when China’s mining shakeout began.

#Ripple ($XRP)

XRP was founded by the same team that created digital technology and payment processing company, Ripple. The team wanted to create an alternative currency that could be used around the world. With speed as one of its main priorities for users worldwide, it is no surprise this new cryptocurrency has grown exponentially in price since launching at $0.006 on January 1st, 2017!

XRP’s all-time high came four years ago in the crypto mania of early 2018 when it hit $3.84.

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Ripple Price: $1.04

Market cap: $48m

24hr Volume: $6.7bn

Circulating supply: 46bn

#Six-month performance:

In the past six months, XRP has risen 66% in value. It rallied to a high of $1.96 in April, only to plummet 73% by July. But since then, it has risen and is among the top-performing cryptos of the month, with a 63% price rise.

Ripple Labs Inc. has not slowed down in its quest to succeed. That’s despite being involved in a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), claiming that Ripple Lab’s sale of XRP as unregistered security violated investor-protection laws. Recently, GME Remittance announced it had joined RippleNet, one of many recent deals helping this company be on top once again!

#Dogecoin ($DOGE)

In an era of digital asset investment, Dogecoin has been one of the most interesting and fun developments. This Shibu Inu branded cryptocurrency began as a joke in 2013. But it rapidly rose to prominence thanks to its dedicated community that spread creative Dogecoin memes like wildfire.

While Bitcoin limits coin supply at 21m coins per reward halving event, Dogecoin supply has no limit. This leaves the cryptocurrency susceptible to devaluation over time if more coins are brought into circulation without any corresponding increase in value or demand.

Thanks mainly to investors looking for something “fun” after experiencing volatility with bitcoin prices dropping below $10K last year (in December), Dogecoin saw an insane 159,900% price growth by June 2021 from $0.0002 four years prior in 2017.

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Dogecoin Price: $0.27

Market cap: $36bn

24hr Volume: $3.8bn

Circulating supply: 130bn

#Six-month performance:

Thanks to celebrity CEO Elon Musk pumping the coin, its value rose to an all-time high of $0.73 in May. Since then its fallen 63%, but it has been climbing again and is up 58% from the end of July. Dogecoin is very much a speculative asset because it has no real-world use.

#Tether ($USDT)

Tether is a cryptocurrency created to serve as an alternative to fiat currencies like US dollars and Euros, but instead of more volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

USDT gives investors a level of confidence when trading on exchanges to avoid some degree of volatility during trades because it’s backed by the US dollar rather than relying on other factors like supply and demand.

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Tether Price: $1

Market cap: $62bn

24hr Volume: $74bn

Circulating supply: 62.9bn

#Six-month performance:

As its price is pegged to the dollar, it shouldn’t fluctuate as other crypto’s do. Therefore Tether has remained steady over the past six months.

#Binance Coin ($BNB)

The Binance Coin is a form of cryptocurrency that you can use to trade and pay fees on its namesake Binance, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world.

Since its launch, Binance Coin has expanded past simply facilitating trades for trading, payment processing, or even booking travel arrangements.

It’s now possible to exchange this coin with other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum or Bitcoin. And because there are only 200m Binance Coins available, demand continues growing as they become scarce.

The price at inception was $0.10, but it’s since risen 403,899% to $404 per token!

At the time of writing, the following is correct:

Binance Coin Price: $404

Market cap: $67bn

24hr Volume: $1.7bn

Circulating supply: 168m

#Six-month performance:

Binance Coin reached an all-time high of $690 in May; it has since slipped 41%.

Unfortunately, Binance is under increasing pressure from regulatory institutions and authorities. Binance’s major global exchange, Binance.com, has faced intense scrutiny this year from regulators in the UK, Germany, Japan, and Hong Kong over concerns around lax consumer protection and anti-money laundering practices.

In response to these concerns, they have changed their business model to include improving procedures. It seeks to become a regulated financial institution and plans to set up several regional headquarters worldwide, seeking licenses wherever they are available.

Company officials are confident that the new regulation changes will be a significant step forward for crypto markets which so far haven’t been able to legitimize themselves as an alternative investment option. This is partly due to fraud-related incidents such as Mt Gox and hacks, which are increasingly prevalent.

#Crypto goes mainstream

The world of cryptocurrency can be a toxic one. There’s lots of rivalry and differing opinions between the various currencies and between crypto and fiat supporters. This view of the landscape taints its credibility and repels individuals from investing.

However, it has become a force to be reckoned with and is likely to be here to stay in some shape or form. Many established companies and institutions have boarded the crypto train in the past six months, and this is likely to continue.

However, there’s also increasing pressure on governments to regulate the industry. President Biden’s recent infrastructure bill seeks to bring more transparency to crypto trading in a bid to raise more taxes.

Being so new, these various crypto investments make for an exciting investment opportunity. But investors need to be aware of the pitfalls and the tax implications in their region.

Alternatively, investors can buy shares in a crypto exchange such as Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) or a crypto mining firm like Riot Blockchain (NASDAQ: RIOT).

Then there are mainstream companies like Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and Square (NYSE: SQ), which have put Bitcoin on their balance sheets giving shareholders a round-about way of owning crypto too.
