Alpen Labs has surpassed a key milestone, integrating over 21 partners on Testnet III as it moves towards its mainnet launch.

#What Milestone Has Alpen Labs Achieved?

Alpen Labs has recently reached a significant milestone that many in the Bitcoin DeFi community have been closely monitoring. The company has successfully integrated over 21 launch partners into Testnet III, its latest testing environment that operates on Bitcoin Signet. This development brings the project one step closer to the anticipated mainnet launch.

Among the partners, bridge operators Stakely and Chainflow are already operational on the testnet, while P2P.org is expected to join the efforts shortly. The primary focus here is to conduct thorough stress-testing of the Strata bridge, which serves as Alpen's central infrastructure for Bitcoin transactions. The Strata bridge utilizes a 1-of-N trust model, meaning only one operator from the entire group needs to maintain honesty for the bridge to remain secure. This design significantly reduces trust requirements compared to traditional bridges, which often represent a high vulnerability point in the crypto ecosystem.

#What Is Alpen Labs Building?

Alpen Labs is dedicated to creating a financial infrastructure native to Bitcoin. Their goal is to establish a programmable layer that allows users to lend, borrow, and mint stablecoins all within the Bitcoin ecosystem. The centerpiece of this initiative is the Strata bridge, designed to link Bitcoin with Alpen’s execution environment.

In Testnet III, Alpen has implemented what it claims to be the first publicly usable garbled circuit-based Bitcoin verifier. Garbled circuits represent a cryptographic technique that enables computation to be validated without disclosing the actual data. When applied to Bitcoin verification, this innovation promises enhanced privacy and security compared to conventional methods.

The first public release of this testnet occurred on August 4, 2025, following the announcement of Testnet III partners on July 28, 2026.

#How Significant Is the Partnership with Liquity?

One of the most noteworthy components of Alpen's roadmap is the Bitcoin Dollar project, often referred to as BTD. This is a Bitcoin-backed stablecoin that Alpen is developing in collaboration with the Liquity team, known for their work on the LUSD stablecoin in the Ethereum ecosystem.

#What Is the Background of Alpen Labs?

Founded in 2022 by a group of alumni from MIT, Alpen Labs has raised around $19.1 million from prominent investors, including Ribbit Capital and Castle Island Ventures. In April 2024, the company transitioned from stealth mode after securing $10.6 million in seed funding, primarily from Ribbit Capital and supplemented by contributions from Castle Island Ventures and Stillmark. The company is currently headed by Simanta Gautam.

The integration of over 21 partner organizations for Testnet III is a noteworthy achievement, reflecting substantial interest in the ecosystem surrounding Bitcoin-native projects that have yet to launch their mainnet.

#What Does This Mean for Investors?

The 1-of-N trust principle utilized by the Strata bridge is especially pertinent for investors assessing risk. Traditional bridges often employ a multi-signature model that necessitates honesty from a majority of operators. In contrast, Alpen's model requires only a single honest operator to ensure the security of transactions. The Strata bridge adopts a hybrid optimistic-ZK approach and draws inspiration from research conducted by the BitVM2 initiative, in partnership with the BitVM Alliance.
