AS Roma has announced the appointment of Tony D’Amico as the club's new sporting director, securing his services until June 2028. This transition concludes a detailed and strategic search by the Friedkin ownership group to enhance the club's sporting operations. Under the terms of his contract, there is also an option for an extension through 2029.
One of D’Amico’s immediate priorities will be renegotiating contracts for pivotal players like Paulo Dybala, the Argentine forward, and Gianluca Mancini, the Italian defender. Both are considered crucial for AS Roma’s ambitions in Serie A, and it will be D’Amico's responsibility to ensure their continued association with the club.
Before arriving in Rome, D’Amico served as the sporting director at Atalanta, a role he held since 2022. His departure from Atalanta was amicable, occurring during a transitional period in the club's management dynamics. Prior to D'Amico's arrival, Roma had navigated a period without a permanent sporting director following the exits of Frederic Massara and Tiago Pinto during the 2025-2026 season, emphasizing the importance of D’Amico’s timely arrival in stabilizing the club.
Dybala, who made headlines with his move to Roma from Juventus, is remarkably gifted but has faced challenges with injuries. Renegotiating his contract will require a careful balance, reflecting his on-field talent while acknowledging the financial implications of his fitness history. On the other hand, Mancini's contract renewal is deemed equally important as D’Amico takes on the crucial role of driving Roma's sporting strategies in the league.
