#What Actions Is Australia’s Financial Regulator Taking Against Crypto ATMs?
Australia’s financial intelligence agency has shifted its strategy from passively observing the proliferation of crypto ATMs to proactively shutting down non-compliant operators. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, known as AUSTRAC, suspended the registration of Cryptolink Pty Ltd, resulting in the removal of 96 crypto ATMs on August 9, 2026. This decision stemmed from the operator's failure to adhere to essential compliance standards.
The suspension is a part of Australia’s increasingly stringent regulations governing the rapidly growing crypto ATM sector. Over the past few years, the number of these machines surged from only 23 in 2019 to about 1,800, highlighting a significant expansion.
#How Is AUSTRAC Regulating Crypto ATM Providers?
Beginning July 2025, AUSTRAC implemented national operational requirements for crypto ATM operators, including a limit of $5,000 per cash transaction. Cryptolink was already under scrutiny from AUSTRAC; in October 2025, the agency fined them $56,340 for insufficient reporting and inadequate risk assessment measures. Despite these penalties, the operator's compliance issues continued, leading to a three-month suspension that took nearly 100 machines offline.
AUSTRAC pinpointed notable deficiencies in Cryptolink’s reporting practices and risk management protocols. This level of oversight illustrates the regulator's commitment to ensuring proper compliance within the industry.

#What Do the User Demographics Reveal?
Analyzing AUSTRAC's data reveals a concerning demographic trend, with individuals aged over 50 accounting for 72% of total transaction values at crypto ATMs. Specifically, users aged 60 to 70 represented 29% of that total value. This reality accentuates AUSTRAC’s emphasis on operator compliance, which is crucial in protecting users from potential fraud. The agency is more focused on ensuring operators can vet transactions rather than monitoring which cryptocurrencies are transacted at these machines.
#What Is the Current Landscape of Crypto ATMs in Australia?
The rise of crypto ATMs in Australia is extraordinary, growing by roughly 78 times from just 23 machines to approximately 1,800 over five years. These ATMs process around 150,000 transactions annually, with total volumes nearing $275 million. Most of this volume is generated through cash deposits, whereby individuals deposit Australian dollars to receive cryptocurrencies directly into their wallets.
AUSTRAC’s recent actions against Cryptolink are part of a broader strategy to regulate the sector more stringently. Previously, the agency also denied renewal of registration for another operator, known as Harro’s Empires. This indicates AUSTRAC's readiness to deregister non-compliant operators rather than merely impose fines, thus demonstrating a serious commitment to maintaining integrity within the crypto ATM market.
