Reports suggest that Binance may face a significant setback as its application for a license under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework in Greece is anticipated to be denied. The rejection could occur within weeks, leaving the exchange unable to serve its European customers starting July 1.
In anticipation of the evolving regulatory landscape, Binance applied in January to operate under this new framework, pinpointing Greece as its designated jurisdiction. That move was strategic, given the need for approval by the end of June to continue its operations within the European Union.
The application, which went to the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, has been closely reviewed with input from prominent advisory firms such as PwC, Deloitte, and KPMG. Binance has emphasized the importance of MiCA as a transformative regulation that not only clarifies the legal framework for crypto but also aims to enhance consumer protections and foster innovation in the cryptocurrency sector.
However, despite Binance's proactive approach and belief that it has satisfied all regulatory requirements, the status of the application remains unresolved. The HCMC has not made any public announcement regarding the progress or outcome of the review, raising concerns about the submission.
Should the application ultimately be rejected, Binance faces immediate operational challenges in the EU, underscoring the importance of acquiring necessary licensing to maintain its presence and service offerings in a rapidly changing regulatory environment.
