Binance chose to withdraw its application for a Markets in Crypto-Assets license from Greece’s Hellenic Capital Market Commission on June 24. This decision came just days ahead of a June 30 deadline that would have required the exchange to cease operations for European clients in the absence of the necessary authorization.
By withdrawing the application instead of facing outright rejection, Binance aims to maintain its capacity to apply for licenses in other jurisdictions without the negative implications of a denial. The time frame for EU firms to gain authorization under MiCA regulations extends to June 2026, but Binance's current operating permission was nearing expiration at the end of June or start of July.
Gillian Lynch, in her role at Binance overseeing operations in Europe and the UK, reassured users that the exchange remains committed to the European market. The company is actively looking into alternative routes for obtaining authorization in other EU member nations. They also promised to keep users informed with updates prior to the impending deadline.
The move to Greece for authorization was always precarious since the country had issued no MiCA licenses up to that point. In stark contrast, Germany had approved over 45 licenses, while the Netherlands had granted 22. The review process for Binance's application reportedly reached the European Securities and Markets Authority, suggesting higher scrutiny than that applied by Greece's national regulator.
For investors and users, Binance's commitment to keep users updated is crucial. Competitors such as Kraken and Coinbase have either secured or are currently in the process of attaining MiCA licenses. Lynch's mention of exploring “different pathways” suggests that Binance may look towards jurisdictions with established MiCA licensing processes, such as Germany or the Netherlands, or even smaller EU nations actively pursuing cryptocurrency business.
As the June 30 deadline approaches, traders should monitor developments closely. It will be important to see if Binance announces a specific country for its license application and whether it imposes any service restrictions for its European users as the date approaches.
