#What is BNB Chain Testing?
BNB Chain has initiated tests on post-quantum cryptography within the BNB Smart Chain ecosystem. This security upgrade shows promising results, yet it comes with a trade-off: the network's performance is reduced by about 40 to 50 percent.
#How Does Post-Quantum Cryptography Work?
The focus of this experiment is on two innovative technologies. The first is ML-DSA-44, a post-quantum digital signature scheme designed to secure transactions against future quantum attacks. The second is pqSTARK, a protocol that enhances the aggregation of validator votes while ensuring quantum resistance.
However, implementing quantum-resistant signatures poses a significant challenge. The size of transaction signatures has escalated dramatically, jumping from 110 bytes to approximately 2.5 KB. This represents an increase of about 23 times for each transaction's cryptographic proof.
Blocks also experience substantial growth. For a similar network load, block sizes have surged from roughly 130 KB to almost 2 MB. Consequently, with blocks becoming nearly 15 times larger, the rate of data propagation among a global network of validators is noticeably slower, leading to diminished throughput.
#Why is the Performance Decline Significant?
The crux of the issue lies not in computational capacity but in data handling. With transaction signatures considerably larger and block sizes significantly increased, the network is challenged to transfer this larger data volume efficiently. Validator nodes are tasked with the necessity to download and verify more information while still adhering to the same temporal constraints for transaction processing.
This is where pqSTARK offers a potential solution. By employing quantum-resistant STARK proofs to aggregate validator votes, this protocol seeks to minimize the consensus overhead. However, despite these optimization efforts, the increased size of transaction signatures continues to exert bandwidth pressure on the network.
