Cardano maps Dijkstra upgrade rollout through 2027

Cardano has outlined a two-step Dijkstra upgrade that could improve throughput, composability, and transaction finality from late 2026.

Cardano has set out a longer-term roadmap for its next major protocol upgrade, with the Dijkstra rollout now planned in two stages rather than one. For retail investors, the key point is simple. The network is targeting higher throughput first, then faster transaction finality later, with both steps still subject to governance approval.

The plan came from Intersect, the governance body helping coordinate Cardano’s development path. Phase 1 is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, while Phase 2 is penciled in for the second quarter of 2027.

Phase 2 could add Ouroboros Peras, listed as CIP-140, through an intra-era hard fork in the second quarter of 2027. Phase 2 matters because it aims to improve transaction finality, which is the point at which a transaction is widely treated as irreversible.

For investors and users, faster finality can improve the user experience and reduce uncertainty around settlement. The proposal would change how validators confirm blocks by introducing a more efficient voting process among stake pool operators.
