Coinbase Derivatives is launching a new S&P 500 equity index futures contract, offering leveraged access to US traders on August 17.

Coinbase Derivatives is expanding its product portfolio by launching a new equity index contract that tracks the S&P 500. This US500 Equity Index Perp-Style Futures contract is set to become operational on August 17 and will provide US traders with leveraged access to one of the most closely monitored equity benchmarks in the country through a crypto-native platform.

#What is Coinbase Derivatives Developing?

Coinbase Derivatives was the first to introduce 24/7 trading for margined futures starting May 9, 2025. Following this, the company launched the Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures on September 22, 2025, which combined mega-cap tech stocks with cryptocurrency assets into a single quarterly contract. By June 14, 2026, the platform had made history by releasing the first perpetual-style equity index futures allowed by the CFTC. Initially, these products included thematic indexes centered around areas like artificial intelligence, defense, and the Nasdaq-100 index. The new US500 contract now enhances the offering by adding access to the most comprehensive and liquid equity benchmark available in the United States.

Perpetual futures differ from traditional ones in that they do not have a defined expiration date. Traders can maintain their positions indefinitely while paying or receiving funding rates that help align the contract price with the underlying asset. This unique structure allows for up to 20 times leverage. As a result, a trader can control $20 in exposure for every $1 of margin posted.

#Why is This Significant Beyond Coinbase?

The Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures contract uniquely integrates positions in leading technology stocks and cryptocurrency assets within a single instrument. Coinbase Derivatives is also exploring the possibility of allowing USDC as collateral for its futures, pending approval from the CFTC. If authorized, traders could use a dollar-pegged stablecoin for margin purposes instead of needing to convert to fiat currencies.

#What Should Investors Monitor?

The availability of 20 times leverage on equity index futures introduces the risk of rapid loss accumulation. Additionally, perpetual funding rates can be high during periods of significant market sentiment changes, which can eat into profits for traders who maintain positions during volatile market conditions.

As the contract launch date of August 17 approaches, there has yet to be any trading volume data or specific market reactions, which is understandable given that the product has not gone live yet.
