Coinbase launches perpetual-style equity index futures on AI, US defense, and Nasdaq's top 100, enhancing crypto trading offerings.

Coinbase is set to expand its trading offerings by introducing several new perpetual-style equity index futures contracts starting June 8. These contracts focus on popular thematic investments such as artificial intelligence and U.S. defense, while also providing exposure to major Chinese companies listed in the U.S. and the top 100 companies in the Nasdaq.

These contracts specifically make trading more accessible by utilizing existing MarketVector indexes, which track significant players in their respective sectors. For instance, the MarketVector US Listed AI 10 Index, with the ticker AI10, consists of the ten largest U.S. companies that derive substantial revenue from artificial intelligence. This careful selection process ensures that only those businesses with real AI operations are included, distinguishing them from just any company that mentions AI.

Similarly, the US Listed Defense 10 Index, known as Defense10, captures the top ten firms in the aerospace and defense sector. Additionally, the China 10 Index, represented as CHN, tracks the most liquid American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) of Chinese companies. This allows traders to invest in notable Chinese tech and consumer brands without delving into the complexities of Hong Kong or Shanghai markets. Finally, the Tech100, indicated by TEK, encompasses the largest one hundred companies in the Nasdaq, offering a diverse portfolio under a single contract.

These futures are categorized as perpetual, which means there’s no defined expiration date. Traders can maintain their positions indefinitely while managing their funding rates to keep the contract price aligned with the underlying index. This innovative feature simplifies the trading process, removing the challenges associated with traditional futures contracts.

Why is a cryptocurrency exchange engaging in stock index futures? The introduction of cross-margining allows traders on Coinbase to potentially use their existing crypto holdings as collateral for these equity index trades. This means you don't have to allocate separate capital to a traditional brokerage, streamlining your trading experience. By incorporating MarketVector’s established indexes, Coinbase provides reliability in how the companies are selected, leveraging the expertise of VanEck, a recognized player in index products.

For investors, the benefits of trading perpetual contracts are clear. Without fixed expiration dates, you eliminate rollover costs and the strategic timing decisions that accompany standard futures. While traditional equity markets have limited trading hours, these perpetual contracts can be traded continuously, offering flexibility and adaptability to your investment strategy.
