US crypto traders can now access Deribit futures contracts through Coinbase, marking a significant shift in the derivatives market.

US crypto traders have received exciting news as they gain access to one of the largest derivatives platforms without leaving Coinbase. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has given its approval for Coinbase Financial Markets, a subsidiary of the exchange, to provide certain Deribit futures contracts to U.S. customers via its foreign affiliate. This development is facilitated through the CFTC's foreign board of trade framework, allowing U.S. intermediaries to send orders to international exchanges with regulatory compliance, streamlining access for investors.

Coinbase's acquisition of Deribit in May 2025 for $2.9 billion marked a landmark moment in the crypto industry. This acquisition, which included significant cash investments and stock, positioned Deribit as a key player in the options trading sector, especially for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. As Deribit operates under Dubai’s Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority, it adheres to CFTC guidelines, making it a compliant foreign board of trade. Coinbase Financial Markets, a registered CFTC futures commission merchant since August 2023, acts as the compliant entity connecting U.S. traders to this global hub.

Why is this change significant? It enhances the derivatives market landscape, offering broader access to crypto options for U.S. traders. With regulated access now available, institutional investors can explore various hedging strategies. This includes tactics such as covered calls and protective puts, which were previously limited to those dealing with offshore jurisdictions. The opening of Deribit’s options suite through a regulated platform could lead to substantial opportunities within the space.

Investors should remain vigilant about potential risks. While the foreign board of trade framework has historical precedence, its application in the volatile crypto market hasn’t faced extensive real-world challenges. This raises important questions regarding cross-border clearing and settlement processes in turbulent market conditions.

As for Coinbase shareholders, the acquisition of Deribit and the newly granted access to U.S. traders could signal a promising pathway toward profitability. The value of a derivatives platform largely hinges on its ability to attract robust order flow, and the regulatory approval for domestic customers could be pivotal for the long-term success of this venture.
