EIP-8361 Proposal Generates Controversy Amidst Ethereum's Future

Stani Kulechov critiques EIP-8361, warning that changes to validator rewards could undermine Ethereum’s borrowing strategies.

Stani Kulechov, known for founding Aave, has raised significant concerns regarding Ethereum’s recently proposed EIP-8361, also called the Tapered Issuance Burn. This proposal, introduced on August 4, seeks to modify validator rewards in a manner that has caused unrest among those dependent on stable staking economics. Kulechov argues that altering the dynamics of validator rewards creates unpredictability that could deter institutional investment and disrupt the borrowing frameworks essential for platforms like Aave.

#What is EIP-8361 proposing?

EIP-8361 aims to implement a mechanism that incrementally reduces validator rewards based on the increasing staking ratio of Ethereum. The target of this proposal is to achieve a complete burn, which would lead to zero net issuance from staking when approximately 50% of the total ETH supply, or around 60.25 million ETH, is staked. Currently, the staking ratio is about 34.4%, equivalent to roughly 41.6 million ETH committed by validators, a figure that is continuously rising. Projections indicate that this could exceed 55% by early 2028 under existing incentives. Meanwhile, transaction fees and miner extractable value will remain unaffected by this burning mechanism, which solely impacts the base issuance rewards given to validators for their role in confirming transactions.

#Why are leaders in DeFi opposing this proposal?

Kulechov’s analysis points directly to the implications for decentralized finance (DeFi). Platforms like Aave enable users to borrow ETH, with interest rates reflecting the staking yields available. If these staking yields are diminished, it could significantly alter the economics surrounding ETH borrowing. This change could deter investors, particularly institutions, from actively engaging with Ethereum.

#What does this mean for Ethereum and its investors?

A discussion about EIP-8361 is scheduled for August 7, coinciding with the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. Yet, without a broader agreement among developers, the likelihood of the proposal being included in the upgrade remains uncertain. This debate uncovers a fundamental rift within Ethereum: on one side are researchers advocating for limiting staking growth to preserve decentralization and network health. In contrast, many builders and capital allocators view staking yields as a crucial component of Ethereum's infrastructure that should remain stable without disruptive changes.
