El Salvador continues its daily Bitcoin purchases, holding approximately 7,734 BTC despite IMF conditions altering its legal tender status.

El Salvador has consistently purchased one Bitcoin daily since November 17, 2022. As of early August 2026, the national reserve holds around 7,734 BTC, valued at approximately $500 million based on current market rates. The daily purchase plan has contributed to over 1,700 coins in the reserve, while the remainder was accrued through strategic bulk purchases and investing during favorable market declines.

One of the most significant accumulation events happened in November 2025, when the government acquired about 1,090 BTC in a single transaction during a price dip, demonstrating a proactive investment strategy. To increase transparency, a public tracker was introduced in May 2024. This tool allows anyone with internet access to monitor each individual 1 BTC transaction, providing insights into the nation’s growing digital asset reserve.

Overseeing these daily transactions is the National Bitcoin Office, which ensures that the program runs smoothly and aligns with the government’s broader financial strategy.

#How did a $1.4 billion IMF deal impact El Salvador's Bitcoin strategy?

Despite facing challenges, such as a $1.4 billion agreement with the International Monetary Fund finalized in late 2024, El Salvador's commitment to its daily Bitcoin purchases remained steadfast. Under the IMF deal, Bitcoin lost its legal tender designation, removing the obligation for businesses to accept it as payment. Additionally, the government began phasing out the Chivo wallet, a state-sponsored application that had facilitated Bitcoin transactions since its legal tender debut in 2021.

Importantly, the agreement did not compel the government to divest its Bitcoin holdings. The daily acquisition strategy continued, underscoring the government’s long-term commitment to Bitcoin investment despite regulatory shifts. This unwavering focus on daily purchases illustrates a calculated approach to the ongoing evolution of Bitcoin's role within the national economy. Since making history in September 2021 as the first nation to embrace Bitcoin as legal tender, El Salvador's path has been closely monitored by the global financial community, highlighting the intersection of digital currency and traditional finance.
