Uniswap Labs introduces Permissioned Pools, enhancing AMM capabilities with automated compliance for regulated assets.

#What Are Permissioned Pools and How Do They Work?

Permissioned Pools are a new feature introduced by Uniswap Labs that enhance the capabilities of the AMM (Automated Market Maker) framework in Uniswap v4. This innovative hook standard allows for the trading of regulated and permissioned assets, ensuring compliance with various regulatory requirements. Through a collaborative effort with Superstate, Securitize, and Dowgo, among others, Uniswap aims to bring additional utility to tokenized assets.

The main function of Permissioned Pools lies in their ability to verify whether a wallet is authorized to perform swaps or add liquidity. Unlike traditional methods that rely on external verification or website restrictions, these compliance checks are embedded within the smart contracts of the pools themselves. This creates a more automated and seamless user experience, especially for regulated assets.

#Who Are the Initial Partners?

Companies like Superstate, Securitize, and Dowgo are early adopters of this new standard, using it to facilitate trading for tokenized funds, securities, and equities. This partnership allows for the creation and management of tokenized assets while integrating necessary compliance checks into the trading process.

Under this design, issuers maintain control over the allowlist, defining which addresses are permitted to engage in trading or liquidity provision. Thus, only those users granted permission can utilize the on-chain trading capabilities provided by Uniswap v4.

#What is the Role of the Permissions Adapter?

The infrastructure incorporates a construct known as the Permissions Adapter, which holds the actual regulated asset. When assets enter the pool, they are converted into a wrapped representation, which is then traded. This representation is removed when assets exit the pool, ensuring that users receive the actual underlying asset rather than just the wrapped version, thus preserving value and integrity.

A key feature of this system includes a permissioned hook that validates the issuer’s allowlist with each swap and liquidity provision. It's important to note that different permissions can be assigned for trading and liquidity provision. For instance, if a wallet is authorized to execute swaps, it does not automatically gain permission to provide liquidity.

#How Do Issuers Maintain Control?

The design grants issuers substantial control over administrative functions associated with their assets. They are empowered to update the verification contract, authorize routers and position managers interacting with the asset, pause trading when necessary, and unwind liquidity positions if required. This flexibility enhances the overall management of compliance-sensitive assets, ensuring that they adhere to regulatory frameworks.

Holders of liquidity position NFTs created through Permissioned Pools cannot transfer these positions to unauthorized wallets, fulfilling compliance requirements. However, they can still withdraw their liquidity even if they lose the necessary permissions thereafter.

#How Does This Fit into Uniswap’s Broader Ecosystem?

Uniswap has emphasized that while the Permissioned Pools add a layer of compliance for regulated assets, the overarching v4 protocol remains permissionless. Developers can still create standard pools without any pre-approval, granting them the freedom to innovate while allowing asset issuers to opt for the Permissioned Pools standard when their assets require strict identity verification and ownership restrictions.

Through collaborations with partners like Superstate for the standardization of tokenized funds and equities, and Securitize for compliant asset trading, Uniswap is expanding its infrastructure. Dowgo's integration under the European Union’s DLT Pilot Regime further demonstrates the potential of this system in facilitating compliant trading.

This launch significantly enhances Uniswap's capabilities, allowing regulated products to access AMM liquidity while ensuring that compliance requirements remain under the issuer's control. As tokenized real-world assets become more prevalent, the introduction of Permissioned Pools marks a critical step in accommodating these developments within the DeFi landscape.
