Gold prices declined recently due to geopolitical tensions and rising inflation fears, impacting its attractiveness as a safe haven investment.

Gold experienced a decline on May 11, with spot prices falling by 0.6% to $4,684.32 per ounce, and US gold futures decreasing by 0.8% to $4,692.70. This downturn was prompted by President Trump's dismissal of Iran's response to a US peace proposal, undermining any immediate prospects for resolving a now ten-week-old conflict. The fallout from this diplomatic setback resulted in higher crude oil prices, renewed inflation concerns, and a strengthened US dollar, all contributing to the pressures on gold prices.

#Why Is Gold Losing Its Safe-Haven Appeal?

Gold is seen as a safe investment during uncertain times, but its allure wanes when geopolitical tensions shift. The breakdown in US-Iran negotiations triggered concerns among oil traders about potential disruptions in supply, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil shipments. An anticipated drop in oil supply drives prices up, contributing to inflationary expectations.

When inflation sourcing rises, it increases expectations for sustained or rising interest rates. For example, if the Federal Reserve perceives higher energy costs, it is less likely to lower rates. Gold, which does not generate yield, becomes the less attractive option compared to interest-bearing investments when rates stay high or rise.

Furthermore, the strengthening dollar adds to the pressure on gold prices. A more robust dollar makes gold costlier for international buyers, who constitute a large segment of global demand.
