HIVE Digital Technologies Invests in Paraguay for Sustainable Bitcoin Mining

HIVE Digital Technologies is expanding Bitcoin mining in Paraguay, focusing on clean energy and ambitious hashrate targets.

HIVE Digital Technologies emphasizes Paraguay as a key player in its Bitcoin mining strategy. The newly appointed president of the country site has articulated a focus on clean energy, systematic growth, and strong management, positioning the nation as an ideal location for sustainable Bitcoin mining.

#Why is Paraguay ideal for Bitcoin mining?

Paraguay holds a unique advantage with its abundant sources of hydroelectric power, primarily due to its location downstream from the Itaipú Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric facilities globally. HIVE manages two significant mining operations in Paraguay: a 200 megawatt facility at Yguazú and a 100 megawatt facility at Valenzuela. These sites collectively offer 300 megawatts of capabilities powered by hydroelectric energy.

The country generates much more hydroelectric power than its domestic demand, resulting in excess energy that could otherwise go unused. This surplus energy, often referred to as stranded power, is effectively leveraged for Bitcoin mining, making this activity a suitable match with local resources.

#How experienced is the new leadership in Paraguay?

The new Country Site President, Gabriel Lamas, brings over 20 years of expertise from the mining sector, including tenures at Bitfarms, a publicly-traded mining firm. Under his leadership, HIVE has reportedly exceeded operational goals during the phase-wise scaling in Paraguay, demonstrating effective management and operational excellence.

#What are HIVE's ambitious hashrate targets?

HIVE aims to achieve a global hashrate of 25 exahashes per second by 2025 and plans to escalate this to 35 exahashes in 2026. This substantial leap represents a 40% increase within a year—an ambitious target especially in a post-halving scenario, where miners earn reduced rewards per block mined. After Bitcoin’s halving in April 2024, only the most efficient mining operations are expected to remain viable.

#How is HIVE planning for the future beyond Bitcoin?

In addition to Bitcoin mining, HIVE is developing its BUZZ platform, tailored to support artificial intelligence and high-performance computing tasks alongside traditional mining operations. This innovative approach indicates that HIVE is not only focused on Bitcoin but is also looking toward the future demands of technology, leveraging the same infrastructure to accommodate AI workloads.

HIVE trades on Nasdaq and the TSX under the ticker HIVE, giving it access to both US and Canadian capital markets, further solidifying its presence in the global landscape.
