India's Government Targets Bitchat: Implications for Cryptocurrency and Decentralized Communication

India ordered GitHub to take down Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app by Jack Dorsey, citing concerns over unlawful gatherings.

India has ordered GitHub to remove Bitchat, a messaging application created by Jack Dorsey that is based on decentralization and Bitcoin principles. This directive was delivered by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, which is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, on July 23, and GitHub had only three hours to comply.

The Indian government expressed concerns that Bitchat could facilitate the organization of illegal assemblies and enable users to bypass internet blackouts during times of civil unrest.

What Are the Features of Bitchat?Bitchat was introduced to the world by Dorsey on July 6, 2025. This app is designed as a completely decentralized peer-to-peer encrypted messaging service that employs Bluetooth mesh networking technology. Its architecture does not rely on central servers, nor does it require user registration or phone numbers.

The legal basis for the takedown request was rooted in Section 79(3)(b) of India’s Information Technology Act, which empowers the government to instruct intermediaries like GitHub to remove content when necessary.

Dorsey has highlighted ongoing tensions with Indian authorities, suggesting their disapproval of Bitchat’s technology is evident. He has pointed out that there is no centralized entity to target, such as a company that could be forced into compliance or have its server confiscated.

How Does Bitchat Compare with International Regulation? This incident is not an isolated case. Earlier, China demanded Apple remove Bitchat from its App Store in April 2026 based on violations of local laws regarding content. This reflects a broader trend among populous nations that are critical of decentralized platforms. By targeting the GitHub repositories where Bitchat's source code is hosted, the Indian authorities are taking a significant step. This approach aims to address the root of the project, rather than merely limit its availability. Microsoft has not commented publicly on whether it adhered to the three-hour compliance request.

What Does Bitchat Mean for Cryptocurrency and Communication?Bitchat’s structure is informed by Bitcoin's peer-to-peer model, allowing it to function without an internet connection through mesh networking. The application also explores offline transactions for Bitcoin, establishing a link between decentralized communication tools and digital currency.

In light of India’s recent regulations, which impose hefty taxes on cryptocurrency trading, it appears the country is willing to accept crypto transactions under strict guidelines but is opposed to decentralized communications that escape government oversight.

What Should Investors Keep in Mind?Investors should closely monitor two key developments. First, they need to determine whether GitHub complied with India's takedown order and if Bitchat's repositories remain accessible in other regions. Additionally, the potential for other nations to follow in India's and China’s footsteps regarding strict regulation of similar decentralized applications should be carefully considered.
