Handala's list of Israeli commando veterans raises significant security concerns amid claims of Iranian support in cyber threats.

#What threats are being posed by Handala?

Handala, an Iranian regime-supported hacktivist group, recently released a list identifying veterans from Israel’s Egoz commando unit as significant targets. This list features approximately 60 individuals associated with the Egoz unit, which is proficient in counter-terrorism and guerrilla warfare. Despite Handala's assertions that these individuals are senior officers, reports suggest that most are former conscripts whose information has been made available through social media platforms.

The group has made alarming threats, stating there is no escape for their targets, and they will hunt them down individually. They also claimed that they have communicated the exact locations of Egoz unit bases to Hezbollah, indicating a strategic alliance intended for possible drone operations.

#How does this fit into Handala’s history?

This is not the first instance of Handala making such threats. Earlier in April, the group published a similar list featuring 100 individuals from the Maglan unit and even leaked information regarding US Marines and Navy officers. In March, the US Department of Justice intervened by seizing four domains associated with Handala, which it identified as part of Iranian cyber warfare activities. However, the group swiftly reinstated its operations.

#What is significant about the Egoz unit?

The Egoz unit is recognized as an elite commando squad within the Israeli Defense Forces, specializing in reconnaissance and counter-guerrilla strategies, especially along the Lebanese border. Iranian media has portrayed the exposure of these veterans’ identities as a significant breach of security. Meanwhile, Israeli sources indicate that most of those listed are low-ranking veterans, whose information was publicly accessible. This incident raises critical questions about the security of personal data in the age of social media and the implications of cyber warfare.
