Iran's soccer team secures US entry for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overcoming visa challenges just days before the tournament.

Iran’s national soccer team has been granted entry into the United States just days before they participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This decision ends months of uncertainty surrounding whether the team would be able to compete on American soil amid geopolitical tensions.

The Iranian players received their US visas around June 5 to 6, 2026. This timeline is significant because their World Cup matches kick off on June 15 in Los Angeles, allowing them less than a week to navigate logistics in a country strained diplomatically with Iran. The team arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, on June 7 or 8 after conducting a training camp in Turkey. They plan to operate out of Tijuana, crossing into the US on match days, utilizing special multi-entry visas designed to facilitate this arrangement.

Not all members of the Iranian delegation were granted entry into the US, with reports indicating that some technical staff did not receive approval. This situation adds to an already complicated process for the squad as they prepare to compete.

Iranian officials have voiced their frustration over the short notice of visa issuance. Preparing for a major tournament is challenging when officials are informed of travel arrangements just days before their first match. The long-standing absence of formal diplomatic relations between the US and Iran further complicates this situation. FIFA requires host nations to ensure that all participating teams can enter the country, but this World Cup presents unique challenges due to the complex interplay of geopolitics and sports governance.

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, includes 48 teams, allowing for considerable flexibility in logistical arrangements. Iran's method of entering through Mexico underlines the unique diplomatic landscape between Tehran and Washington.

As the tournament nears, several global brands are preparing for the massive audience expected at the event, including Kraken as the official crypto exchange for the World Cup. However, the sponsorship agreements are separate from the visa complications experienced by the Iranian team. If Iran progresses deep into the tournament, the situation surrounding the full support staff accompanying the team may become critical, especially considering previous visa denials.

The tournament is set to begin on June 15 in Los Angeles, and despite the obstacles, Iran is set to compete.
