Lido has initiated a significant infrastructure change for Ethereum staking by migrating over 8 million ETH, valued at approximately $16.5 billion, to Ethereum’s enhanced 0x02 validators. This transition, enabled by the Pectra upgrade, leads to a reduction of about 33% in the total number of validators on the Ethereum network.
So, what exactly does CMv2 bring to the table? The migration aligns with Lido’s Curated Module v2, which received approval from the Lido DAO after thorough audits and testnet trials. This update marks the most crucial structural adjustment since the introduction of Lido V2 in 2023. Previously, each Ethereum validator was limited to a capacity of 32 ETH. To maintain its status as the top liquid staking provider, Lido required a vast network of validators. However, with the implementation of Pectra, validators can now manage larger amounts, allowing the consolidation of multiple 32 ETH nodes into fewer, more powerful validators.
Furthermore, attestations—vital messages that validators transmit to confirm the state of the Ethereum chain—are projected to decrease by approximately 29%. Although this reduction will not directly impact gas fees or transaction speeds for users, it will contribute to a less congested consensus layer.
In terms of financial implications, this transition will also see Lido’s 34 professional node operators required to post locked ETH collateral for the first time. Previously, the setup relied heavily on the operators’ reputation alone, which raises new standards for security and responsibility within the system.
Investors should be aware of potential effects during the migration. Lido stakers might experience a minor decrease in returns. The anticipated annual reduction in staking rewards is about 0.28%.
Why is this significant beyond Lido? The platform commands a substantial portion of the total staked ETH on the Ethereum network. Thus, any infrastructural adjustments made by Lido can have wide-reaching effects across the ecosystem. The shift in validator count signifies a major event within the Ethereum network, affecting all users, not just Lido stakers.
The rollout of CMv2 coincides with the introduction of CSM v3, another component of the comprehensive Core Upgrade package approved by the Lido DAO.
