MARA Holdings has cut its Bitcoin holdings by 34%, shifting strategy to enhance liquidity and diversify into AI and high-performance computing.

#How is MARA Holdings Adjusting Its Bitcoin Strategy?

MARA Holdings has notably reduced its Bitcoin assets, selling nearly 18,250 BTC over a six-month period. As of June 30, the company's Bitcoin holdings stood at 35,577 BTC, marking a significant decrease of approximately 34% from 53,822 BTC at the end of 2025. This decline reflects both a drop in owned Bitcoin and in Bitcoin receivables, which are Bitcoin amounts loaned or pledged as collateral.

By the close of the second quarter, MARA's total digital asset holdings were valued at over $2 billion. This represents a considerable decline from around $4.7 billion six months earlier, driven by reductions in holdings and fluctuations in Bitcoin prices.

#What Changes Occurred in MARA's Bitcoin Approach?

In early 2026, MARA made a pivotal decision to sell 20,880 BTC for roughly $1.5 billion during the first quarter. The primary use of these proceeds was to repurchase about $1 billion worth of convertible debt. This strategic move aimed to enhance the company’s balance sheet and lower its overall leverage.

The decision marked a departure from its previous full-HODL approach, which emphasized retaining all mined and acquired Bitcoin. The updated strategy allows MARA to strategically monetize its Bitcoin holdings. This flexibility can help meet liquidity needs, reduce debts, fund growth initiatives, and support other corporate objectives efficiently.

#How is MARA Diversifying Beyond Bitcoin?

MARA is actively diversifying its business interests, particularly into the fields of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure. The company has made strategic acquisitions, including Exaion, and announced intentions to acquire the Long Ridge Energy & Power platform.

Despite the reduction in its Bitcoin holdings, MARA Holdings remains one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin among publicly traded companies, trailing behind Strategy, Twenty One Capital, and Metaplanet. This position underscores MARA's continued significance in the cryptocurrency landscape, even as it navigates a new chapter of its operational strategy.
