Nansen to Close Somnia Validator: What You Need to Know

Nansen plans to close its validator on the Somnia network by July 16, 2026. Delegators must act quickly to manage their SOMI tokens.

#Why is Nansen Shutting Down Its Validator on Somnia?

Nansen, a blockchain analytics platform that also acts as a staking provider, recently announced its decision to terminate its validator on the Somnia network by July 16, 2026. This shutdown requires all delegators to unstake or redelegate their SOMI tokens before this deadline. New delegations will not be accepted after this date. Users still have access to manage their tokens through Nansen’s staking app or the official Somnia dashboard, while staking services will continue functioning during the wind-down period.

Nansen entered the Somnia network as a validator around August 1, 2025, shortly before the network's mainnet and the SOMI token launch on September 2, 2025. This closure aligns with Nansen’s strategy of streamlining its staking platform, having previously phased out support for validators on other networks like Archway.

Considering the mechanics of delegation, SOMI delegators need to be aware that Somnia uses a standard 28-day unbonding period for staked tokens. Although emergency unstaking options are available, they may incur penalties. If a delegator starts the unstaking process after July 16, they will have to wait until mid-August to receive their liquid SOMI tokens.

#What is the Significance of Somnia?

Somnia is a Layer 1 blockchain compatible with EVM, aiming to provide high-performance solutions predominantly in gaming and social platforms. The network implements a MultiStream consensus mechanism designed to execute more than 1 million transactions per second, achieving finality in less than a second. The SOMI token was introduced with a maximum supply of one billion tokens, supporting applications that demand low latency, like in-game asset transfers and real-time social interactions.

#What Should SOMI Holders Do Next?

For those who want to continue participating in the Somnia ecosystem, the simplest option is to redelegate their SOMI to another active validator. This process is typical within proof-of-stake networks, and it generally does not trigger an unbonding period. However, it is crucial for SOMI holders to be mindful of the impending July 16 deadline, as the 28-day unbonding timeframe can lead to delays, effectively penalizing those who procrastinate in taking action. Being proactive in managing these tokens will be essential for maintaining engagement with the network.
