Sam Altman of OpenAI admits mistakes in the military contract announcement after user backlash, leading to revisions for surveillance protections.

Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, admitted to recent missteps surrounding the announcement of a significant agreement with the US Department of War. He characterized the communication about this contract as both opportunistic and poorly executed, prompting strong backlash from users.

In his reflections shared on the platform X, Altman acknowledged that the company should have taken more time before finalizing the deal, which allows OpenAI's technology to be utilized on classified military networks. The hasty rollout resulted in a swift and notable increase in uninstalls of ChatGPT in the US, showing a 295% spike within a day. This stirred a viral movement pushing for app cancellations, which led to a staggering 775% rise in negative reviews on app stores. Consequently, a competing AI assistant, Claude, developed by Anthropic, surged to the top of Apple’s download charts.

In response to the intense backlash, OpenAI is now revisiting its contractual terms to clearly prohibit domestic surveillance on US citizens, referencing relevant constitutional and national security regulations. The revised agreement will prevent any intentional tracking or monitoring of American citizens, particularly through commercially sourced personal data. Additionally, the Defense Department has stated that their services will not be leveraged by intelligence agencies, including the NSA, without a formal amendment to the contract.

Further emphasizing the importance of accountability, Altman expressed the need for artificial intelligence governance to be subject to democratic oversight, ensuring that no single private entity shapes societal direction independently. He affirmed OpenAI's commitment to collaborating with government entities while protecting civil liberties. To address concerns within the company, Altman announced plans for a comprehensive all-hands meeting, describing this event as a pivotal decision for OpenAI regarding direct government involvement.
