#What Recent Developments Has Plume Made in Tokenization?
Plume has recently achieved a significant milestone in the tokenization market. Kimber Digital Assets Bermuda ISAC Ltd., a subsidiary of Plume, has obtained a Class M Digital Asset Business License from the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This development, which occurred on May 20, marks KDAB as the world’s inaugural regulated onchain vault manager.
This licensing grants Plume the authority to legally create and distribute vault tokens. These tokens are linked to institutional assets, such as private credit, real estate, and commodities, and they operate under stringent anti-money laundering and know-your-customer regulations similar to those applicable to stablecoins.
#How Does the Class M License Function?
The Class M designation is one of three types of licenses outlined in Bermuda’s Digital Asset Business Act, which has been active since 2018. Bermuda has already attracted significant crypto companies, including Circle and Coinbase, establishing itself as a hub for digital assets.
Vault tokens serve as fractional interests in pools of tokenized institutional assets. These tokens provide a bridge to real-world financial products on the blockchain, allowing investors access to opportunities that typically require a private banking relationship and investment thresholds in the seven-figure range.
Under the terms of the license, KDAB must uphold stringent AML and KYC standards through the entire lifecycle of its tokens, from their issuance to their distribution.
Moreover, Plume is also registered as a transfer agent with the US SEC through Kimber Transfer Agency LLC. This dual-licensing framework adds a layer of compliance, covering two highly regulated environments for digital assets.
#What Does This Mean for Institutional Investors?
For institutional investors exploring tokenized assets, Plume’s dual regulatory framework—being a BMA-licensed vault manager alongside a US SEC transfer agent—offers a comprehensive compliance system that risk management teams can thoroughly evaluate.
Being recognized as the first in a regulated category may present unique challenges as there is no established precedent regarding how regulators will handle complex scenarios. This includes aspects like token redemptions in volatile markets and the enforcement of regulations that span multiple jurisdictions. This status positions Plume as a noteworthy player in the evolving landscape of institutional investment in blockchain assets.
