Qantas recently announced a significant milestone for frequent flyers and aviation enthusiasts. Starting in October 2027, the Australian airline will commence non-stop commercial flights linking Sydney and London, making it the longest passenger flight in the world.
This ambitious route will cover over 16,000 kilometers, with travel times estimated between 19 to 22 hours, influenced by various conditions. This initiative, known as Project Sunrise, has taken years to develop, with London selected as the first destination. New York will follow, providing direct connections from Australia’s east coast to these major cities where travelers previously encountered multiple stopovers.
To operate this groundbreaking route, Qantas has chosen the Airbus A350-1000ULR, an ultra-long-range aircraft specifically designed for these challenging distances. The first of these aircraft, named Vega, is scheduled for delivery in April 2027.
As for ticket sales, they are projected to open in February 2027, allowing about eight months for preparations between the delivery of the aircraft and the inaugural flight. Plans are to establish daily non-stop service between Sydney and London during the 2027-2028 winter season, subject to necessary regulatory approvals, completion of flight trials, and aircraft certification.
How does this service update the iconic Kangaroo Route?
Qantas has operated routes from Australia to Britain for nearly 80 years, referred to as the Kangaroo Route. Historically, this connection required stops for refueling in cities like Singapore, Karachi, and Cairo. In 2019, Qantas conducted test flights using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on the Sydney-London route, which helped the airline assess the impacts of ultra-long-haul travel on passengers. Insights gained from these research flights influenced the cabin layout and service strategies to be utilized on the new A350-1000ULR aircraft.
Currently, the longest commercial flight is held by Singapore Airlines, connecting Singapore to New York. The upcoming Qantas service will not only compete but will exceed that distance.
