State Street Corporation has signed an agreement to acquire Santander CACEIS, impacting the asset servicing industry across Latin America.

#What does State Street's acquisition mean for the asset servicing industry?

State Street Corporation has initiated an agreement to acquire the Santander CACEIS Latam Securities Services business. This joint venture currently manages approximately $470 billion in assets under custody and $225 billion in assets under administration. The acquisition spans operations in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, markets that are becoming increasingly significant for both traditional and digital asset infrastructures.

Though the announcement came on July 28, the deal will not finalize until 2027, as it awaits necessary regulatory approvals and employee consultations. Specific financial details regarding the transaction remain undisclosed.

This strategic move is in line with a growing trend of large-scale consolidation within the asset servicing sector. Institutional investors are increasingly seeking a sole provider capable of managing custody, fund administration, foreign exchange, and both middle- and back-office services across various markets.

State Street's CEO has highlighted the critical nature of merging global capabilities with local market expertise. The firm's international operations lead has pointed out the advantages of combining State Street’s extensive global platform with the joint venture's strong acumen in Latin American markets.

Goldman Sachs and legal firm Freshfields are providing advisory services to State Street throughout this transaction. The sellers, Santander Group and CACEIS, are parting with a business that has a substantial foothold in serving institutional investors across the three nations.
