Texas to Ban Crypto Kiosks Amid Growing Scam Concerns

Texas has lost millions to crypto kiosk scams, prompting state lawmakers to consider a complete ban, reflecting national concerns.

#What Are the Risks Associated with Crypto Kiosks?

The rise of crypto kiosks has sparked serious concerns, especially in Texas, where losses from scams reached approximately $57 million in 2025. With state lawmakers advocating for an outright ban on these machines, the risks to consumers seem to outweigh any perceived benefits of convenience.

Crypto kiosks operate similarly to ATMs but in reverse. Users insert cash to receive cryptocurrency rather than withdrawing cash from bank accounts. Unfortunately, these machines have become a prime target for scammers.

A common scam involves swindlers targeting individuals, particularly the elderly, through urgent claims such as unpaid taxes or compromised bank accounts. Victims are often instructed to withdraw cash, which they then deposit into a crypto kiosk, effectively handing over their funds to the scammer's wallet. Once the transaction is completed, retrieving the funds is nearly impossible.

The staggering losses, estimated at $56.8 to $57 million in Texas alone, likely represent only a fraction of the total, as many victims do not report the scams due to shame or confusion.

#How Are States Responding to Crypto Kiosk Scams?

Texas is not alone in its concerns regarding crypto kiosks. Several states are taking action to protect consumers. Indiana was the first to implement a statewide ban on these machines, effective in March 2026. Tennessee plans to follow suit in July 2026, with Minnesota also pushing a ban slated for August 2026.

On the federal level, the introduction of the Crypto ATM Fraud Prevention Act, designated S.710, aims to provide consumer protections specifically targeting fraudulent virtual currency kiosks.

#What Does This Mean for Investors and the Crypto Landscape?

For most mainstream cryptocurrency investors utilizing platforms like Coinbase or Kraken, these regulatory changes will have no significant impact on everyday transactions. Crypto kiosks generally serve as a niche entry point for those favoring cash transactions or lacking access to traditional exchange platforms.

However, for operators of crypto kiosks, the situation appears bleak as state bans continue to emerge. Major players such as Bitcoin Depot and Coinme may find their operational capacities severely restricted. Each prohibition reduces their market potential, leading to increased compliance costs in states where regulation is enforced instead of outright prohibition.

If Texas, a state typically seen as supportive of cryptocurrency initiatives, moves forward with banning these kiosks, it underscores a significant shift, suggesting that even the most favorable jurisdictions are recognizing the consumer protection needs in the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.
