Is AI development shifting? Yann LeCun believes that current AI capabilities, focused primarily on language models, are limited. At a recent tech conference in Paris, he discussed his vision for a more advanced form of artificial intelligence. He argues that future AI systems should not merely generate text but should also be capable of comprehending real-world phenomena through predictive modeling.

LeCun, a prominent figure in the AI field and co-founder of AMI Labs, has criticized the existing training methods employed in large language models like ChatGPT. These models predict the next word or phrase without a genuine understanding of the physical world. He points out that even with extensive datasets, such models can't grasp fundamental realities, like the rolling of a ball down a hill or the shattering of glass when it falls.

To address these limitations, LeCun proposes the development of what he terms “world models.” These advanced AI systems aim to learn from sensory experiences and interactions with the environment. They build internal frameworks that represent physical behaviors. At AMI Labs, this innovative approach is underpinned by a technical structure called Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture, or JEPA.

With its ambitious plan, AMI Labs, co-led by LeCun and CEO Alexandre LeBrun, secured significant funding. The company launched in December 2025 with a clear mission to pursue this next generation of AI. Just a few months later, in March 2026, it raised $1.03 billion in seed funding, a remarkable feat in European tech financing. The backing of industry giants like NVIDIA and notable investors like Bezos Expeditions highlights the confidence in this new paradigm.

What implications does this have for investors? LeCun asserts that simply scaling existing language models will not achieve human-level intelligence. With AMI Labs equipped with considerable financial resources, its development journey may provide critical insights into the future of artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA's investment stands out as particularly significant, as the company has been a major player in the AI boom by supplying GPUs that support current AI frameworks. Their commitment to AMI Labs suggests a shifting focus in technology investments, moving away from conventional algorithms toward a future where predictive modeling opens new avenues in artificial intelligence.
