Fantasy Top, the on-chain trading card game, is shutting down by the end of June after facing issues with user engagement and profitability.

#What is the fate of Fantasy Top?

Fantasy Top, an on-chain trading card game centered on trading digital cards of crypto influencers, will cease operations by the end of June. This announcement was made between May 20 and 21, and it marks the conclusion of nearly two years of activity.

The final competitions on the platform will conclude on June 18. Following this date, any outstanding rewards and payments will be processed within the subsequent week, leading to the permanent shutdown of the platform.

Multiple gameplay modes, including prediction markets and arena competitions, were discontinued as of May 21. Throughout its operational life, Fantasy Top distributed over $20 million in value to its users and allocated $3.2 million to incentivize the influencers featured in the card game. Additionally, early investors received a complete dollar-for-dollar refund of their investments.

#Why did Fantasy Top struggle?

The core reason for Fantasy Top's challenges rests in the misalignment between its traditional trading card game structure and the incentives tied to the on-chain model. The platform aimed to cultivate a community of dedicated players focused on the gaming experience. Instead, it attracted speculative users more interested in trading cards for quick profit.

The trading volume over its lifetime failed to support the fundamental trading card game model, despite the team's numerous attempts to refine the platform. Over its two years of operation, Fantasy Top experimented with various social features and gameplay dynamics to improve user experience.

Initially launched on the Blast L2 network, Fantasy Top transitioned to Coinbase's Base network in July 2025.

#What does this mean for the future of SocialFi and on-chain gaming?

In its post-mortem analysis, Fantasy Top candidly acknowledged its user acquisition issues. The broader cryptocurrency market did not exhibit a significant response to the announcement of the platform's closure. While the Fantasy Top experience serves as a cautionary tale, it also highlights the potential complexities in merging traditional gaming with blockchain incentives. The future of SocialFi and on-chain gaming will likely depend on creating models that attract committed users and foster genuine engagement rather than speculative trading.
