#Why Are Zcash Transactions Paused?
If you've attempted to transfer your ZEC recently and encountered obstacles, you're not alone. Several major cryptocurrency exchanges have halted Zcash deposits and withdrawals. This pause is precautionary and tied to the upcoming NU6.2 mainnet upgrade, set to activate tomorrow at 9 am ET.
Exchanges like Bitget and Blofin decided to temporarily restrict ZEC transactions to safeguard user assets during this critical transition, a common practice when blockchain upgrades occur.
#What Does the NU6.2 Upgrade Fix?
The NU6.2 hard fork addresses a significant soundness issue found in Zcash’s Orchard shielded transaction circuit. Activation will occur at mainnet block height 3,364,600, restoring Orchard functionalities through an updated circuit and new verifying key, effectively replacing the faulty component with a patched version.
To manage this, the Zcash Foundation introduced two software versions. The Zebra 4.5.3 acted as a temporary soft fork for immediate concerns, while Zebra 5.0.0 encompasses the complete NU6.2 package planned for the hard fork.
#Are There Any Network Issues After Activation?
Following the NU6.2 activation, there were initial reports of delays in block production. However, investigations revealed these to be synchronization issues among nodes rather than a total network failure.
It's worth noting that Zcash has navigated similar scenarios previously. For instance, NU5 took effect in May 2022 and NU6 followed in November 2024. Each upgrade saw temporary trading pauses across various exchanges, with services resuming once the network stabilized.
#How Is ZEC Performing Amid These Changes?
Interestingly, despite what may typically unsettle traders, ZEC experienced an 8% gain in price during the upgrade period, hovering around $590 recently.
For traders, liquidity remains a top concern. With multiple platforms currently blocking deposits and withdrawals, the depth of ZEC's order book may be thinner than usual, which could lead to more pronounced price fluctuations as pent-up transaction demand is unleashed when services resume.
The Zcash community is actively discussing the future NU7 upgrade as well. For investors assessing ZEC's long-term viability, the key indicators are not just the soundness bug but also how swiftly it was addressed and how the market reacts, especially in terms of adoption rates for Orchard shielded transactions once operations are back to normal.
