Yield Guild Games has decided to cease operations in its game publishing division, YGG Play, which is set to be fully offline by August 1. This decision will result in the loss of jobs for 35 employees, as confirmed by co-founder Gabby Dizon.
What led to this decision and what are the future plans for YGG?
Initially launched in 2025, YGG Play aimed to provide a platform for casual web3 gaming, branded as the “Casual Degen” model. The division sought to appeal to gamers who preferred lighter experiences that incorporated on-chain elements. Popular titles such as LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper were included in the offering, as well as a game launchpad that collaborated with third-party studios.
Dizon indicated that the shutdown is primarily due to unsustainable commercial conditions in the larger macroeconomic context. Despite this, YGG Play was able to achieve its product vision. As of July 9, transactions on the YGG Play platform were disabled, with a complete cessation of operations slated for August 1. Nonetheless, certain games linked to independent developers, such as GIGACHADBAT, will continue to function without YGG’s support.
For the employees affected by this transition, YGG is providing eight weeks of additional pay along with assistance in securing new employment opportunities.
What is YGG's next step?
Rather than returning to its original gaming guild model, YGG is pivoting strategically. The company plans to concentrate on two core areas: community-driven play-to-earn projects and the generation of AI training data derived from gaming experiences. This shift reflects a calculated move to adapt to the evolving landscape and leverage emerging technologies to enhance their operational focus.
