Canva integrates AI tools to attract millions of users while retaining existing ones, reshaping its growth strategy in the competitive design space.

What happens when a strong AI partner develops capabilities similar to your product without needing users to interact with you? Unlike most companies, Canva is experiencing a positive twist on this narrative.

The Australian design platform reports that its collaborations with AI tools such as ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are actually driving millions of new users to its services while maintaining strong engagement from existing customers. Rather than acting as competitors, these AI chatbots function as effective distribution channels.

#How is Canva Integrating with AI?

Canva initiated its Model Context Protocol server back in July 2025, first forming connections with Anthropic’s Claude. This integration allows users to create, edit, and manage their designs seamlessly within their AI conversations, eliminating the need to switch back and forth between platforms. Since this launch, millions of designs have been produced using Claude alone.

In February 2026, Canva further enhanced its offerings by incorporating brand-kits for both ChatGPT and Claude, enabling users to access company logos, fonts, and color palettes directly within their AI dialogues. By June 3, 2026, Canva also extended full design creation features to all ChatGPT users, granting OpenAI's vast user base immediate access to Canva’s comprehensive toolkit.

#What Numbers Reflect Canva's Growth?

In its financial report, Canva highlighted that it reached 265 million monthly active users in 2025, generating a notable revenue of $3.5 billion. This figure showed a remarkable increase from about $2.8 billion in 2024, marking a 25% growth year-over-year. As of mid-2025, Canva's valuation soared to $42 billion, driven largely by these AI integrations, which are seen as complementary to their core offerings. The engagement from current users has remained stable even with this surge in new user traffic.

#Why is This Significant for the Industry?

Canva's collaboration with Anthropic began around two years before launching the MCP service, giving it an advantage in integrating Visual Suite into AI workflows. By forming early relationships with ChatGPT and Claude, Canva is securing a newer demographic of users ahead of possible competitors.

The MCP server transforms conversations within ChatGPT and Claude into potential customer acquisition tools. However, this growth strategy comes with risks, as the dependency on OpenAI and Anthropic means that any changes in their approach to design capabilities or MCP access could dramatically impact Canva’s growth trajectory.
