Naver expands its AI capabilities through a partnership with Nvidia, planning a significant upgrade to its data center to support domestic AI.

Naver Corporation has taken significant steps to transform from a search engine into a powerhouse in AI infrastructure.

The South Korean technology leader recently strengthened its partnership with Nvidia, launching an initiative to create AI facilities at a scale that can produce gigawatts of power. This venture kicks off with a notable enhancement to its Sejong hyperscale data center, which will see a 55-megawatt augmentation, set for completion by the first half of 2027.

Upon the announcement on June 7, Naver's stock surged by approximately 9-14%, indicating strong market confidence in this ambitious project.

#What are Naver and Nvidia building?

The core of this partnership revolves around Nvidia's DSX platform. This comprehensive design integrates chips, systems, software, and facility architecture, streamlining AI infrastructure deployment. This platform aims to optimize token throughput per megawatt, thereby maximizing AI processing efficiency while minimizing the operational costs associated with running AI operations.

In addition to the substantial increase in Naver's data center capacity, this initiative follows the earlier completion of a 4,000-GPU Nvidia B200 installation, amplifying Naver's readiness for large-scale AI processing.

#How does this align with sovereign AI strategies?

Both Naver's chairman and Nvidia's CEO highlighted the need for countries to bolster their domestic AI capabilities instead of relying on foreign cloud service providers. The enhanced GAK Sejong facility is designed not only for local industry and government needs but also for global cloud business. Furthermore, Naver and Nvidia are exploring opportunities to extend such infrastructure into Europe and the Middle East, responding to international interest in AI that mitigates dependence on American tech giants.

#Why is this important for the AI infrastructure landscape?

The integrated approach provided by Nvidia’s DSX platform facilitates simpler deployment of AI systems, allowing firms like Naver to efficiently assemble necessary technologies without the need to source from various vendors. This not only solidifies reliance on Nvidia’s suite of products but also positions Naver as a key player in the evolving AI infrastructure market.
