The recent military actions in the Gulf of Oman, specifically the US military's targeted missile strike on the oil tanker M/T Jalveer, have sparked significant geopolitical tensions and highlighted the precarious nature of maritime security in the region. On June 11, two Hellfire missiles struck the vessel's engine room, rendering it inoperable. Fortunately, all 20 crew members, who were from India, reported safe. However, this incident marks a troubling continuation of violence, as it represents the third incident involving Indian-crewed ships within just one week.
Earlier in the same week, an attack on the M/T Settebello, a vessel flagged by Palau, resulted in the tragic deaths of three Indian sailors. This was particularly alarming as these fatalities occurred during ongoing U.S. military operations aimed at enforcing a naval blockade designed to restrict Iranian oil exports.
Since mid-April, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has been conducting a series of military operations in the Gulf of Oman. This blockade seeks to inhibit Iran's crude oil export capabilities. Over approximately two months, this campaign has resulted in the disabling of at least nine vessels violating the blockade, most of which were under flags like Palau and Guinea-Bissau yet operated primarily by Indian nationals.
In the case of the M/T Jalveer, CENTCOM stated that the crew was given numerous warnings prior to the missile strikes, giving a rationale for the actions taken against the vessel. Although the ship was significantly damaged, it did not sink, and the crew survived the ordeal without injuries.
The Indian government has expressed grave concerns regarding these events. High-ranking officials from New Delhi have summoned U.S. representatives to convey their displeasure and to lodge formal diplomatic protests. The crux of India's concern lies in the safety of its citizens, who are being threatened by U.S. military actions against international commercial shipping.
In defense of its operations, CENTCOM has articulated a need for maintaining maritime security amidst escalating tensions and instability in the region. The U.S. maintains that the blockade is essential for deterring illegal oil exports and that vessels that do not heed warnings of potential consequences do so at their own risk.
